Ornithoptera priamus miokensis WORLD RARITY! 1925 PAIR
Ornithoptera priamus miokensis WORLD RARITY! 1925 PAIR
Riker framed Ornithoptera priamus miokensis male and female pair. O. p. miokensis is one of the most difficult to find birdwings due to an extremely limited range. Due to the lack of recent sightings, this subspecies is now believed by many to be possibly extinct or highly threatened. The label on this specimen is Oct-Dec. 1925 A.C. & F. Pratt, Mioko Island (the island miokensis was first described). Antwerp Pratt and sons Charles and Felix were incredibly famous collectors of the early 1900's, providing many museums with their butterfly specimens as well as collecting for the Rothschild family and other well-known entomologists. It is worth noting that historically most of the Pratt family collecting in New Guinea was done from 1902-1921 and A. Pratt passed away in 1924. This label does match other known museum labels in style, wording, and location descriptions used, so could be a generic family label, or could be used by a museum to designate the date of acquisition.
